Highlights
1. This work develops a new top-down method that can prepare multi-cavity carbon spheres from solid polymer spheres.
2. The crucial point of this approach is the employment of mesoporous silica as the fence, which can create a pyrolysis micro-environment to restrict the pyrolysis gas from free escaping.
3. The interior grid-like structure of HCS varies from sparse to dense by increasing the degree of crosslinking of SPS internally.
