Highlight
1、The new self-pillared 2D polymer nanoplates(PPNPs) and ultramicroporous carbon nanoplates (PCNPs) with integrated surface protrusions have been prepared via a one-pot multi-component sequential assembly method. The molecular level pillaring process is surprisingly fast, i.e., in 10 min.
2、The thickness of nanoplate edges and the density (roughness), angle as well as height of protrusions can be precisely tuned.
3、The PCNPs show the narrow ultramicroporous size distribution of 4.8 Å, the basal plane of ~6 nm and the nano-protrusion height of 8 nm. The PCNPs exhibit two orders of magnitude faster CH4 diffusion kinetics than the commercial carbon molecular sieves. Exemplified in coal bed methane purification/separation, the CH4/N2 selectivity up to 24 and 10 at a low CH4 partial pressure and 1bar, respectively.
